ROTAVIRUS
Rotavirus is a group of viruses that cause Gastroenteritis (Infection of the Stomach and Intestines).
It is the most common cause of severe diarrhoea in children, often requiring hospitalisation.

It is highly contagious and spreads from person to person, or child to child.
It is really no fun!
Tends to affect Children and Infants more severely, often requiring hospitalisation.

Rotavirus Symptoms
- Watery Diarrhoea
- Fever
- Abdominal pain
- Vomiting
- Loss of Appetite
- May cause dehydration and even death in severe cases.
Rotavirus Vaccination
Vaccination is available and comes in oral form. There are 2 different vaccines.
The one we use at GreenLink Medical Clinic requires only 2 doses.
We usually give it together with the Infanrix 5 in 1 or Hexa (6 in 1) injections between 2 to 6 months.
Rotavirus Vaccination is completed by 6 months of age.

Rotavirus - Some interesting info...
Some of you might recall the Gastroenteritis outbreak at Owen Road, Pek Kio Market not too long ago in May 2016.
There was a big outbreak of Gastroenteritis in the area and this was first raised by a GP who noted an increase in the number of cases.
There were 180 cases linked to the outbreak and out of 26 Stools samples, 23 tested positive for Rotavirus.
17 cases were admitted to hospital.
This was basically a reminder for all of us not to be too complacent and to always practice good personal hygiene such as washing our hands.
